Hands on Woodturners

                                               17 Aug 2006 Meeting

The meeting began at 7:04 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance led by club President Ron Browning.

There were 36 in attendance with 34 signing in.

   Business in order of presentation:

1.  Ron Browning provided an update on the club trailer and led a discussion on the purchase of a new (smaller – 7’ x 14’) trailer for the club’s equipment.  The other trailer, which proved to be too large, was sold for $4,300.  This was approximately $300 more than we paid for it so there was no financial loss to the club.  The used trailer which had been located had water and was not something we wanted to buy.  It was recommended to the club that we purchase a new tandem axel trailer that is 7’ x 14’.  Club officers had looked at several new trailers and brochures on some of them were passed around during the meeting.  The price range of the recommended new trailer varied between $3,450 and $4,600.

2.  Don Nelson made a motion that we authorize the club officers to buy a new tandem axel 7’ x 14’ trailer for no more than $4,500 plus what ever cost is involved in tax, title, and tags.  The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

3.  Frank Sospenzi provided the treasures report.  The club has a working balance of  $9,329.09.  This balance included the $4,300 from the sale of the old trailer.

4.  Ron Browning told the club that the officer’s were looking at replacing the current TV monitors with a large screen digital projection system.  For the meeting, Don Geiger provided his projection system and screen so the club members could see one in action.  It was nice!  One much appreciated factor with the projection system is the significantly reduced storage space and set up time.   Ron again asked for any members with expertise in this equipment to contact Nick DiMona or Tony Cortez.  From the last meeting, volunteers for the projection committee were: Nick DiMona, Ken Habedank, Don Geiger, and Jerry Brinkman.

5.  Frank Sospenzi provided an update on the Florida Wood Turning Symposium and registration forms were available for any members wishing to attend.  Don Geiger announced that on 8 Oct 2006, Bruce Hoover is presenting a week long class on hollowing at the John C. Campbell Folk School in NC.  Don will be assisting him and recommended it to interested turners.

7.  Ron Browning won the “bring back” which was a bowl turned by Ken Habedank.

Joe Rodriquez did the demo.  He did a great job of demonstrating the turning of a stemmed vessel or goblet.  Had examples of goblets he had previously turned, talked about techniques, answered questions and turned a beautiful goblet out of camphor wood.  He also showed and discussed a new series of turning tools which will soon be available.

Next month the demo will be by Richard Morris on 21 Sep 2006.

 Respectfully submitted,

 Ken Habedank, Secretary
