Hands on Woodturners

20 July 2006 Meeting

The meeting began at 7:08 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance led by club President Ron Browning.

There were 40 in attendance with 36 singing in.

Business in order of presentation:

1. There was a discussion concerning buying a new (smaller – 7’ x 14’) trailer for the club’s equipment. The club officer’s found a used trailer which may be satisfactory, selling for $2,000. One question was, should the replacement trailer be purchased before the current trailer (which has proven to be too large) has been sold. The club treasurer’s report for June showed $4,816.04. Having the replacement trailer available before the current trailer has been sold allows the club to transfer and store the equipment and have an empty trailer for sale/immediate delivery.

2. Frank Mekenzie made a motion to go ahead and purchase the new trailer now. The motion was seconded by Greta Caprio and passed unanimously.

3. Ron Browning told the club that the officer’s were looking at replacing the current TV monitors with a large screen digital projection system. He asked for volunteers for a committee to research which system might prove to be the most cost effective and report to the club at the next meeting. Initial research indicated that a suitable system could be purchased for about $1,000. A similar system was used at the AAW National Symposium in Nashville and proved to be highly satisfactory. It was small and easily stored, easy to set up, and provided excellent viewing.

The volunteers for the committee were: Nick DiMona, Ken Habedank, Don Geiger, and Jerry Brinkman.

4. There was a discussion concerning forming some committees for such functions as the club library, the video setup and filming of demonstrations, and for special functions. Dave Melton and Nick DiMona volunteered to head up the Christmas party and be in charge of food for special functions. Other committees will be discussed at the next meeting.

5. Jerry Brinkman provided the "Bring Back" – and it was won by Ken Habedank.

6. Al Caton did the demo. He talked about how he used various jigs to help him make multiple copies of the same basis shape and showed examples. He then demonstrated how he turns a large, shallow bowl/platter. He demonstrated his unique, self made, tools and the techniques he uses to save time and reduce vibration on large turnings. It was an excellent demo and both enjoyed and appreciated by all.

Next month will be a demo by Joe Rodrequez on 17 Aug 2006..

 Respectfully submitted,

 Ken Habedank, Secretary
