Hands on Woodturners 19 April 2007 Meeting
The meeting began exactly at 7:00 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance led by club President Nick DiMona. There were 39 in attendance.
Business in order of presentation:
1. Club President, Nick DiMona gave an update on the club’s library. Responses from club members were reviewed at the officer’s meeting and it was found that many of the items requested were already in the library. This indicated that many club members simply do not realize what we have. In order to help the members, Nick has put an updated list of all the books, publications, VCRs and DVDs that are currently in the club’s library on the club’s web site – www.handsonwoodturning.org. Additionally, one new set of three DVD’s by Jimmy Clewes was ordered.
2. Club treasurer, Frank Sospenzi, gave the treasurer’s report. The ending balance was $6,681.31. Frank also announced that 30 tickets for the raffle of the bowl coring system donated by Bob Huss were available. The raffle will be held as soon as the 30 tickets are sold. Each raffle ticket is $5. Frank also advised the members that $720 of AAW educational grant for our projector has arrived and the new projector will be purchased. As always, minutes of the club’s meetings and the treasurer’s monthly report are available on the club’s web site.
3. Member at large, Al Caton, gave an update on the club’s trailer. Club members including Richard Morris, Al Caton, Nick DiMona, George Benac and Tony Cortese have been customizing the interior of the trailer with shelves, etc., so that it better suited to our needs.
4. Dave Melton reminded club members that there will be an all day sawdust session at Rainbow Springs on 19 May. It will start at 10 A.M. and be free for all, club members.
5. Club Vice President, Tony Cortese provided an update on our work with the Sheriff’s Boys Ranch. The Ranch received a grant from AAW and have purchased two small lathes and required accessories for turning. Tony Cortese and Nick DiMona have been the primary instructors thus far. Bub Huss, Don Geiger, Rich Morris, Earnest Folino, and Ken Habedank have also volunteered to help with this program.
6. The “bring back” was a beautiful birdhouse turned by Don Nelson, and was won by Carl Cox. The highlights of the “instant gallery” included three beautiful hats and a rosewood bowl with carved roses by Richard Morris, and a fluted vase by Al Caton.
7. The “demonstration” was by club member Don Geiger. Don provided a sharpening demonstration which highlighted sharpening the Ellsworth gouge but included sharpening techniques for a variety of other turning tools. It was a great demonstration with many good tips.
Next meeting will be 17 May 2007. Dave Barriger will be the demonstrator.
Respectfully submitted.
