17 April, 2008
Club President Nick DiMona opened the meeting at 7:08 pm, and led the members in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. One new member and two visitors were introduced. There were 32 members present at the meeting.
Business in order of presentation:
1. Nick asked for a volunteer to back up Rich Morris on the video equipment. He informed the club members that the club is purchasing patches that have the club logo sewn into it. The club will furnish each member one patch free. Additional patches will be available for purchase. 2. Nick informed members that the club is purchasing a bowl saver for loan to members. The proposed fee will be $5/week. This way, when a member has an exceptional piece of wood, he can use the bowl saver to get several bowls out of it. There will be a club demonstration on how to use it. 3. Club Vice President, Tony Cortese brought the members up to date on the Sherriff’s Boys Ranch. The Boys were awarded a grant from the AAW which will provide funds for four of the boys and their supervisor to attend the National Convention of the AAW this year. Also, Tony Cortese and Nick DiMona will be driving to the ranch on 9 May 2008 to provide additional training for the boys. Another sawdust session for the boys, probably in Nick’s shop, will be planned for a future date. 4. Treasurer Frank Sospenzi gave the treasurer’s report which along with the minutes was accepted unanimously. 5. Club member Bill Smith again provided a large selection of wood for the raffle. This month he provided fresh cut camphor. It was beautiful wood and much appreciated by the many winners during the raffle. 6. The bring-back was won by Jerry Abley. 7. Nick reviewed the “instant gallery.”
The demonstration was by Dave Barriger. Dave showed us how he makes platters. He had numerous examples with him that he talked about and handed around for club members to look at while he critiqued them. Then, he turned a nice platter on the club’s lathe. It was an outstanding demonstration and was much appreciated by all.
The next meeting will be 15 May 2008. The demonstrator will be Jesse Woodard. Jesse will show us how he makes his beautiful segmented bowls.
Respectfully submitted,
