                                                                                                     18 Jan 2007 Meeting

The meeting began at 7:10 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance led by club President Ron Browning.

There were 40 in attendance.

   Business in order of presentation:

1.  The first order of business was the election of officers for 2007:

            Nick DiMona – President

            Tony Cortese – Vice President

            Frank Sospenzi – Treasurer

            Ken Habedank – Secretary

Al Caton – Member at Large

            George Benac – Librarian

With no more nominations from the floor, the acting secretary cast the vote for acceptance and it was agreed to, by voice vote of the members present.

2.  The new president began by thanking Ron Browning for his many years of dedicated service.

3.  Thanks were given to Dave Melton and all the others who made the Christmas party a success.

4.   The Youth Mentoring Program was presented to the membership by Tony Cortese.  Tony is on the Board of Directors for the AAW and was asked to try to start a mentoring program in our area.  The Sheriff Youth Ranch was chosen.  Contact was made and arrangements were set up to do the first class.  The boys were very respectful and interested, and it was decided to continue the program once a month.  If more members become interested in working with this program, it could become a weekly class.  During the first class, Nick DiMona did a demo and Tony answered the boy’s questions.

5.  The club purchased a new mini-lathe and we now need a stand for it.  Don Wither said he might have one that could be adjusted for it.  A motion was made to spend no more than $200 for the stand.  Don made the motion and Jerry Brinkman seconded it.  Motion carried by voice vote.

6.  Another “fix-it” project was discussed for putting shelves in the new trailer.  Barry Caito motioned that they do it and Ernest Folino seconded it.  The motion was carried by a voice vote.

7.  Four of the club’s small TVs were up for sale.  Seven people wanted them so they each got a ticket and four were drawn.  Each TV was $35 and the winners were:  Dave Melton, Nick DiMona, Carl Litzkow, and Mary Barry.

8.  Frank Sospenzi gave the treasurer’s report.  The balance is $5,060.79.  Frank also told about the book titled River of Destiny donated to the club by Bhin Pho and signed during the 2007 Florida Woodturning Symposium.  It will be in the library for members to read.  Note: The treasurers report and the secretaries report are made on the club’s web site (http://handsonwoodturning.org).

9.  Four guests were welcomed and six new members were recognized:  Harry Witt, Mitchell McMullen, Donald Yokel, Richard Levine, Ed Rood, and Robert Edwards.

10.  Sawdust sessions were discussed.  They will be held with small groups in different locations until a shop large enough to accommodate a larger group is located.

11.  Joe Tann won the Bring Back drawing.  Torben Jensen won a shirt and then drew another ticket for the turning tool – and won that also.  Luck man for the evening.

12.  Tony Cortese did the demo.  He both discussed and demonstrated laying out patters for carving on turned pieces.  Tony also discussed and demonstrated carving techniques he uses.  Several of Tony’s carved pieces were there for illustration.

13.  The meeting was adjourned with applause for Tony at 9:25 PM.

Next months meeting will be on 15 Feb 2007.

Respectfully submitted.

Ken Habedank, Secretary
