Club President Nick DiMona opened the meeting at 7:10 pm, and led the members in saying the Pledge of Allegiance. New members and visitors were introduced. There were 32 members present at the meeting.
Business in order of presentation:
1. Nick reviewed upcoming events to include the all day Demonstration by club member Barrie Harding scheduled for 23 February at the VFW Club, and the Club Picnic scheduled for 22 March. The Club Picnic will be held at Whispering Pines Park in Inverness. The all day Demonstration on 23 February will be free for club members and will include lunch. 2. Dermot Samuda made a motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting. It was seconded by Jesse Woddard and passed unanimously. 3. Club Treasurer Frank Sospenzi provided a report on the Florida Woodturning Symposium (FWS) which was held last weekend. Frank reported that club member Ron Whedon is handing the reins of FWS Committee member over to club member Richard Morris for 2008. Richard Morris and Barrie Harding will both be demonstrators at the 2008 FWS. Frank also read the treasurer’s report. Gretchen Caprio made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report It was seconded by Ron Whedon and passed unanimously. 4. Nick reviewed the slate of officers forwarded to him by the nominating committee and presented to club members at the December 2007 meeting. He asked if there were any additional nominations and there were none. He then asked the Ken Habedank, the club secretary to cast a vote for the nominated officers. The vote was cast and the following club members were elected for 2008: Club President – Nick DiMona; Club Vice President – Tony Cortese; Club Treasurer – Frank Sospenzi; Club Secretary – Ken Habedank. Club President Nick DiMona appointed club member Al Caton to be the Member At Large. 5. Bob Sawyer won the “bring back” which was a beautiful segmented vase by John Verwey. Lou Coggins photographed the “instant gallery” for the club web site.
The Demonstration was by Richard Morris. Richard demonstrated his technique for making twisted finials and end pieces on a lathe while it is turning slowly. He used an air driven die grinder with a burr attached. It was an outstanding demonstration and he produced a beautiful end piece for one of his hollowed spheres during the demonstration.
The next meeting will be 21 February 2008.
