Hands on Woodturners

May 17, 2007

The Meeting came to order at 7 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Business in order of presentation:

1.      The Bowl Saver Raffle still has 6 tickets to go.  When those, and only those, 6 tickets are sold, then the winning ticket will be drawn.

2.      Congratulations were in order, and given to Al Caton and his crew, for the fine job they did on the inside of the new trailer. Now everything has its proper place, with lots of room to spare.  Now they are looking into getting the Club’s name on the outside of the trailer.

3.      Dave Melton handed out sign-up sheets for the Super Sawdust Session and Picnic to be held May 19th at Rainbow Springs State Park.  Admission to the Park is $1.00 but the fun and food are free to club members. (The Officers opted to pay the admission to all who attended. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish to enhance the picnic menu.

4.      The Treasurer’s report stated that the club had spent $592.20 during the past month and revenues amounted to $944.00.  The ending balance is now $7033.11.

5.      Nick DiMona handed out a newsletter from the Boy’s Ranch where several of our members conduct a wood turning class.  A very nice article written by one of the boys at the ranch.

6.      Having received the initial payment from the AAW grant, a new projector was purchased for our club meetings.  The rest of the payment will arrive shortly.  Nick asked if someone would be willing to learn how to use the camera and projector, so Richard Morris, our “chief engineer”, will have a backup when needed.

7.      We have one new member, Dick Sherman, from Citrus Hills, join the club tonight.  Welcome, Dick!

8.      The members were reminded that the club still has a few tools for sale if anyone is interested.

9.      Following the Instant Gallery, outstanding as always, and the Bring Back drawing, everyone settled in for the evening’s demo.

Demonstration:  Elevated Vessels by Dave Barriger

Dave began his demo by telling us how he happened to start making “elevated vessels” which consists of a hollow vessel, a pedestal and a base.  By way of a slide show, Dave showed a variety of turned items that illustrated what he had done in the past, as well as showing several pieces that he brought for us to see and admire. Dave had a large piece of red maple, which he turned to show different aspects of process of making an elevated vessel.  A variety of tools that are needed to create the desired effects were also shown and demonstrated.  At the end, Dave showed a beautiful elevated vessel that had “moved” on him and now was considerably off center.  With that, Dave ended his demonstration with the words “if you haven’t had a error, you haven’t advanced”. Trial and Error is the name of the game in creative wood turning.

Respectfully submitted.
