Hands on Woodturners

21 February, 2008

Club President Nick DiMona opened the meeting at 7:10 pm, and led the members in saying the Pledge of Allegiance.  Two new members and three visitors were introduced.  There were 35 members present at the meeting.

Business in order of presentation:

            1.  Nick reviewed upcoming events to include:  the all day Demonstration by club member Barrie Harding scheduled for 23 February at the VFW Club, and the Club Picnic scheduled for 22 March.  The Club Picnic will be held at Whispering Pines Park in Inverness.  The all day Demonstration on 23 February will be free for club members and will include lunch. He also told the club that we are again hosting the boys from the Sheriff’s Boys Ranch in the near future and volunteers will again be needed.

            2.  Nick introduced Dave Melton who provided more details on the upcoming all day demonstration and club picnic.

            3.  Richard Morris presented the club a check for $1,000 from Florida Woodturning Symposium (FWS).  The money is to be used for education and will help supplement bringing in top wood turners for future club demonstrations.  Club president Nick also introduced the club members who are currently on the FWS committee as well as past committee members.

            4.  Club treasurer Frank Sospenzi gave the treasurer’s report which along with the minutes was accepted unanimously.

            5.  Tony Cortese reviewed future programs.  At this time he does not have a demonstrator scheduled for the March meeting, and has Dave Barringer scheduled for the April meeting.  He is trying to get Ric Erkes from North Carolina for the next all day demonstration.

            6.  Nick reviewed the “instant gallery.”  This month’s “instant gallery” was incredible by any measure.  Among the many outstanding pieces were a pierced cowboy hat Richard Morris, a Florida State Fair “best of show” blue ribbon bowl by Tony Cortese, and several other blue ribbon bowls from the State Fair by Tony Cortese and Al Caton.  This was one of the most outstanding “instant galleries” we have ever had at a club meeting.

            7.  The “bring back” was a beautiful pepper grinder made by last month’s winner, Bob Sawyer.   The winner of this month’s “bring back” was new member Ray Gallahue.

The Demonstration was by past club President Ron Browning.  Ron turned a lidded box and demonstrated his technique for arriving at a “perfect fit” without measuring with a caliper or other mechanical device.  He used a dry piece of maple burl so that the box could be completed during the demonstration.  He presented the beautifully finished and signed piece to the club for raffle at the next club meeting.  It was an outstanding demonstration and much appreciated!

The next meeting will be 20 March 2008.
